There is a plan to introduce “quota-based fuel distribution” and there is a distant opportunity of fuel price increase. Both decisions will push wide adoption of solar energy generation in Ethiopia that is more cost-effective and way more environment-friendly. 🔺Why Ethiopians consume little fruits and vegetables? Because fruits and vegetables are expensive.
🔺Why fruits and vegetables are expensive in Ethiopia? Because there is too little of them.
🔺Why there is too little fruits and vegetables in a country with such fertile land and laborious farmers? Because there is little irrigation and you need a lot of water to grow fruits and vegetables.
🔺Why there is little irrigation in Ethiopia. Because the country lacks energy supply for pumping water.

🔺 Ethiopian telecommunication giant ethio telecom has more than 7000 towers. Each tower consumes more than 10kWh of electricity.
🔸We can assume that 30% of all ET towers are located in off-grid locations and supported by diesel generators.
🔹Assuming that those diesel generators are burning 70 liters of oil each day, we would conclude that Ethio Telecom consumes 54 thousand tonn of diesel oil every year and throws 145 million kg of CO2 into atmosphere.

🔶"Perfect storm" on global energy markets:
🔸 A drought in South America caused the drying up of rivers, thus closing hydroelectric power plants.
🔸 Coal mines in China are flooded after heavy rains thus stopping coal power plants.
🔸 Post-pandemic revival of Asian economy is calling for more electricity and oil.
🔸 Sanctioned Russia will have to reduce oil&gas export.
🔸 OPEC countries haven't decided to increase oil production.
🔺 There is little doubt that oil prices will raise in the mid-term perspective.
✳️ Solar energy and other kinds of renewable energy is a unique solution as it provides (1) free, (2) clean, (3) indigenous energy.

“A three-year plan to revive Ethiopia’s economy was disclosed by the Ministry of Planning and Development in April 2022… the Planning and Development Minister Fitsum Assefa (PhD) relayed to FBC.
The Minister further communicated that the plan took into account national and global current events, and it will be implemented in the upcoming Ethiopian budget year (2015 E.C). The recovery plan seeks to ensure citizens’ economic well-being by fostering high-quality economic growth. To that extent, a secretariat office has been formed under the Ministry of Finance to lead reconstruction activities in order to revitalize the war-torn economy, and it is expected to bring about evident transformation”.

🔺What do we know about $5.5 million dollars that will be spent to prepare for a 3.3 GW solar energy project called “Desert to Power”?
🟡 “Desert to Power” is 4 years old initiative by African Development Bank and several other development organizations, focused on the Sahel region (narrow strip of territory to the immediate south of Sahara desert, extending across Africa from East to the West and including 11 countries - Ethiopia and Eritrea among them).
The goal is to develop at least 3.3 GW of solar energy generation in that region. Early project documents show 5 priorities:
- Action 1: Accelerate the deployment of solar energy production
- Action 2: Extend and strengthen the power transmission network
- Action 3: Accelerate electrification through off-grid solutions
- Action 4: Revitalize national power utilities
- Action 5: Improve the business climate
If project report from 2020 can be trusted, $5.5 million of technical assistance are to be used for two purposes: (1) pave the way for the development of solar projects through variable renewable energy (VRE) grid integration studies and (2) support the deployment of a regional hybridization programme for reducing the use of high emitting fossil fuel generation (notably diesel).
We might expect another $350 million dollars from Green Climate Fund that will be used mostly used towards improvement of the grid and utilities-related activities but some part will be used for building 1000 mini-grids (in Sahel regions of 11 countries).
🇪🇹 Why is this important for Solar Energy in Ethiopia?
First, the aim of the “Desert to Power” initiative is to advance solar energy use.
Second, “Desert to Power” might support solar/battery/hybrid mini-grids and those are essential for rural electrification of Ethiopia.
Third, this initiative might be able to help EEU develop more practical approach to large solar energy generation projects.

I understand that this approach helps to present nice numbers and victorious reports, but this is so wrong on so many levels.

✳️ Ethiopian companies need electricity to do business, produce goods and provide services. Grid-supplied electricity is scarce, unreliable and inaccessible in most of the country (65% of the country, to be exact). Therefore businesses turn to diesel generators, and we know that Ethiopia produces the SAME amount of diesel-generated electricity as we get from grid. $400 million dollars every year are spent of oil that is burned to generate electricity.
🇪🇹 Ethiopia imports 10 000 diesel generators 375KVA+ every year. Giving the lifespan of generator of 5 years we might estimate that there are 50 000 heavy diesel-generators in the country, burning ungodly amount of every hour (50-70 liters, to be exact).

🎉 Happy 59th Birthday to African Union!
🔺 We have to remember that is was established in Addis with strong support of Emperor Haile Selassie, and we all shall remember words that were said at the First Conference of African Union: "AU shall endeavor to save Africa from the clutches of neo-colonialism and resurrect African dignity, manhood and national stability".
🔺 I would say that African Union have been successful in achieving every objective and even overcame European Union as much better steward of the continent: no African country invades another African country.
🔺 Next step will be to engage the "fifth column" of 170 million Africans who live outside of Motherland. African diaspora brings enormous value -- I see this firsthand in 🇪🇹 Ethiopia.

🚑 Medical centers and hospitals need a lot of electricity to run modern and sophisticated equipment like MRI machines or state-of-the-art operating rooms. African hospitals can’t be different from European or Asian ones, and they need same amount of electricity.
🟡 We believe that small projects (described in the article) shall be complimented by 1-2 MW solar installations for regional hospitals and large medical centers.
🇪🇹 Zero-carbon hospitals will emerge in Ethiopia with the support of development organizations and local solar energy developers.

🟡 Must read for everyone interested in energy. Aamir Paul (Schneider Electric USA) have written a great article and Olivier Blum (also Schneider Electric) have shared it. Highlights are below.
✳️ First was Electricity 1️⃣.0 - when mechanical power (“domesticated animals”) was replaced/aided by early electricity generation (“domesticated electricity”).
✳️ Second came Electricity 2️⃣.0 - migration from decentralized mill power to centralized power plants.
✳️ Now we are experiencing Electricity 3️⃣.0: replacing fossil fuels with green power.
🔺 Next step - Electricity 4️⃣.0, when decentralized electricity generation is combined with digitized management of energy production and distribution and digital analysis of energy consumption when big data helps to identify energy waste, downtime threats, and other insights.
🇪🇹 I think that we at 10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia would be able to make Ethiopia a world leader in Electricity 4.0. 👽 3 reasons why I am happy to share my (rather sceptical) opinion on cryptocurrencies: 1️⃣ I am computer science major (MSU) with some practical experience with database management (and blockchain is essentially a decentralized database); 2️⃣ Since 2015 I am researching crypto projects and have helped to structure government strategies in regard with crypto; 3️⃣ most cryptocurrencies use a lot of energy and 10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia is concerned.
👉🏾 Three simple questions that I am asking my readers:
🔺 Do you believe that the government can stop illegal use of crypto without banning it? How exactly can this be executed?
🔺 Do you believe that the cryptocurrency market will flourish if crypto will be treated as other valuable assets: registered and taxed?
🔺 Do you think that there is a way for the government to decide which technologies should be prioritized for development?

🔺 As soon as city electricity in Addis will be cut off (this happen 3-4 times a week for couple hours, right?) this beautiful building will start two (!) huge diesel generators, producing a whopping 1 MegaWatt of electricity every hour.

🍽 Little food for weekend thoughts.
🇪🇹 Ethiopia today has capacity to generate 4.5 Gigawatt (power) of electricity. GERD will generate 5.25 Gigawatt (power) of electricity when it will be fully operational (in 5 years, by the way). Ethiopian generation capacity is now running at ~50%, because stations need to be renovated.
✳️ So, in the ideal world Ethiopia will have capacity to generate 9.75 Gigawatt (power).
🔺 At the same time, the modern economic development means 1-2 Gigawatt (power) per 1 million people. Ethiopia has 120 million people. So Ethiopia needs to have 120-240 Gigawatt (power) of generation capacity!
☝🏾Always remember that Ethiopia needs 1️⃣2️⃣ (twelve) TIMES more electricity generation that it has today.

✳️ GERD reservoir is huge: 73 square kilometers, or 73 million square meters.
🟡 We can place ~30 million solar panels on this surface, and modern panel generates 550 watt of electricity (peak amount).
🔺 Solar panels on GERD reservoir will generate 16.5 Gigawatt of power at peak moment. Sun is not at its peak for 23 hours every day, so real generation will be ~27 Terawatt/hours - almost the same as the generation by the GERD itself.

🇯🇵 Japan is one of the richest countries in the world. Its population size of 126 million people is comparable to Ethiopia's. Japan also has one of the largest energy generation in the world, 50 times more that Ethiopia has.
🔆 If Ethiopia installs solar panels on the area of 0.7% of Somali region (50*50 kilometers), we will have as much electricity as Japan.
Details:
1️⃣ Japan consumes 986 terawatt-hours of electricity (in 2020, IEA data) per year.
2️⃣ This amount of terawatt-hours per year will be generated by 550 GWp installed capacity of solar panels (PVsyst data for Somali region of Ethiopia).
3️⃣ Modern PV panels produce ~550 Watt (ex.: JinkoSolar Tiger Pro 72C).
4️⃣ To have generation capacity of 550 GWp one needs to use 1 billion PV panels.
5️⃣ Modern PV panels size is 2278*1134 mm., that is ~2.5 sq.m. (ex.: JinkoSolar Tiger Pro 72C).
6️⃣ One billion PV panels will take ~2500 sq.km., or 50*50 km.
7️⃣ Area of Somali region is 328000 sq.km. (Wikipedia), of which 2500 sq.km. is 0.7%.

🔸 International Energy Agency just published an underwhelming 250 pages "Africa Energy Outlook".
🔸 International Energy Agency thinks that African energy consumption will grow 6.5% per year (75% in 10 years), and that expectation is scandalously miniscule.
🔸 Diminutive expectations for African energy set the target for electricity consumption in Africa at 700 kWh per year /10 times less than in Europe/.

🔆 Green, shiny, beautiful, futuristic.
🔹A “minor issue” is that this setup is 3-5 times less efficient than trivial setting of high-performance panels with proper orientation to the sun. Still, this is a work of beauty :-)
👉🏾 Detailed math: this installation uses 8900 square meters. 4450 solar panels can be installed for this area. Modern solar panel is at least 500 Wt, so this installation should have generation potential of 2.2 MW power. The installation is located in Saudi Arabia, and we can assume that it is producing 1700 kW•h per each kW power installed, therefore its production potential is 3.740 GW•h.

🟡 Agrivoltaics: what is this great thing, and why world needs it so much? Post #1/7
🔺Agrivoltaics = ground-mounted photovoltaic systems that are installed on farmland which is simultaneously used for food production.
🔺Agrivoltaics is addressing two key issues:
1️⃣ climate change that drives water shortages, extreme weather and increasing global temperatures
2️⃣ land as a scarce resource, as the demand is coming not only from residential, agricultural and industrial use, but also from energy needs for solar
🔺Beyond improving land use efficiency, agrivoltaics can also increase resilience and agricultural yields, provided it has a suitable technical design. Fruit and special crops that are increasingly affected by hail, frost, and drought damage may benefit from the protection provided by the partial roofing with PV modules.

🟡 Agrivoltaics: what is this great thing, and why world needs it so much? Post #2/7
🔺The development of the agrivoltaic technology in recent years has been highly dynamic. Today it is prevalent in almost all regions throughout the globe. The installed capacity has increased exponentially, from around 5 MWp (megawatts, peak) in 2012 to at least 2.8 GWp (gigawatts, peak) in 2020. This was possible thanks to government funding programs in Japan (since 2013), China (around 2014), France (since 2017), the USA (since 2018), and most recently Korea.
🔺According to calculations of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, the installed photovoltaic capacity in Germany has to be increased 🔆 8 to 10 times by the year 2050 for a climate-neutral energy system.
🔺Advantages of agrivoltaics:
- Harmonious combination of ground-mounted PV systems with agriculture
- Potential additional benefits for agriculture e.g., protection against damage from hail, frost and drought
- Lower cost of electricity compared to small rooftop PV systems
- Diversification of source of income on farms

🟡 Agrivoltaics: what is this great thing, and why world needs it so much? Post #3/7
🔺Agrivoltaics offer further potential for synergies between photovoltaics and agriculture such as:
- reducing the need for irrigation by up to 20 percent
- possibilities of rainwater collection for irrigation purposes
- reduction in wind erosion
- use of the PV mounting structure for protective nets or foils
- optimizing light availability for arable crops, e.g. PV tracking systems
- higher module efficiency through better convective cooling
- higher efficiency of bifacial modules due to larger distances to the ground and adjacent module rows
🔺Barriers to Implementation
- regulatory framework is probably the greatest hurdle to exploiting its potential. In Germany, for example, the dual use of land for photovoltaics and agriculture is currently not defined in law.
- Social acceptance certainly poses a further challenge for the use of agrivoltaic systems in some regions. The early involvement of stakeholders and the citizens of municipalities on whose territory the planned agrivoltaic system is to be built is therefore one of the important fields of action.

🟡 Agrivoltaics: what is this great thing, and why world needs it so much? Post #4/7
🔺 Based on the current state of knowledge, all types of crops are generally suited for planting under an agrivoltaic system; however, different effects on the yield are to be expected due to shading effects. Highly shade tolerant crops such as leafy vegetables (lettuce), field forage (grass/clover mixture), various types of pomaceous and stone fruits, berries, soft fruits, and other special crops (such as wild garlic, asparagus, and hops) appear particularly suitable.
🔺 Agrivoltaics likely offers the greatest potential for synergy effects with special crops in the areas of wine growing, orchards, and vegetable cultivation. This is due to the high value creation per unit area and often relatively sensitive crops are accompanied by a greater need for protective measures. The meaningful design of the agrivoltaic structure can ensure direct protection against environmental influences such as rain, hail and wind. Furthermore, the supports can also be used for the integration of additional protective elements such as hail protection nets and foil tunnels. Agrivoltaics can help reduce the use of foils and the associated soil contamination by plastic.
🔺 A preliminary study by @Fraunhofer ISE at a site in India’s federal state of Maharashtra indicates that the effects of shading and reduced evaporation from agrivoltaic systems can boost tomato and cotton yields by up to 40%. The researchers expect the land use efficiency for this region to nearly double.

✳️ Electricity generation works the same way for agrivoltaics and ground-mounted photovoltaic systems. However, the requirements for the technical components and supports for the system are entirely different for agrivoltaics due to land cultivation:
1️⃣ the height and alignment of the system
2️⃣ the mounting structure or foundation
3️⃣ the module design
4️⃣ rainwater management
Example: for industrial agriculture that involves large machines (like combine harvesters) PV modules are mounted at heights of 3-5 meters.

🇪🇹Ethiopia and 🇰🇪Kenya have signed Power Trade Agreements, operation guidelines and procedures, wheeling as well as interconnection agreements.
💰 As per the agreement, Ethiopia will export 200 megawatts of electricity to Kenya in the first phase of the power export deal, with a plan to double it in due course.
👉🏾 The power interconnection system is an investment of $1.3 billion with a modern 500kv line, an important vehicle for East Africa interconnection and nucleus for regional integration and prosperity.
☝🏾 The Ethiopia-Kenya electricity transmission line is expected to integrate power systems of five countries including Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda under the Eastern African Power Pool Master Plan.
08:51
---- 🤓 Three ideas ----
1️⃣ We need to see things in perspective. Ethiopia has ~4.5 GWp installed capacity, with GERD and few more new projects we will get to 11-12 GWp. Economic prosperity calls for 60-100 GWp, so we have a long, long way to develop energy generation in the country, and 400MW does not make any substantial difference in our development.
2️⃣ Energy export is political decision. If Ethiopia can get better relations with neighbors by selling electricity - it will benefit economic development, and help us prosper.
3️⃣ I think that the only way towards the energy abundance in Ethiopia lays thought decentralized renewable solutions, when electricity is generated and consumed off-grid. The Government’s strategy for electrification of Ethiopia assumes that 35% of the country (i.e. 42 million people) will be served by off-grid generation. My humble opinion: we should think of 50% of the country being off-grid with 10-50 MW of solar energy supporting regional cities and every agro-indistrial and industrial facility self-sufficient in terms of electricity via rooftop installation, while farming receives electricity with agrivoltaics (solar panels installed high above the ground).

👹"Solar containers” are pure evil. Five reasons:
1️⃣ shipping containers are heavy by themselves (4.5 ton), and the whole solution (containers+panels+invertors+batteries) in a single package weights ~20 ton. This load is just impossible for 99.9% of roads in Africa, so one cannot deliver this thing to the location without enormous hardship;
2️⃣container needs heavy crane to unload, such crane isn’t usually available in rural places. The alternative: "self-unloading" mechanisms that consists of 4 metal legs by the corner of container (i.e. 5 ton per leg) call for ideally cemented site that is hard to build;
3️⃣ in order to open the container and raise it’s supporting constructions for solar panels the construction team need to place the container in a way that it is totally level (0% tilt) - extremely complicated task in real world;
4️⃣ solar panels need to be oriented to south (as we are in northern hemisphere), so the whole setting of container shall be done this way, and this is often impossible, so the setting is suboptimal and panels generate less energy that it should;
5️⃣ there is no use of local materials and there is no sustainable materials — everything is imported and everything is expensive.
🔆 And this fancy monster does not generate substantial amount of electricity. First of all - there are not too many panels, from 70 to 150 of them (35 to 75 kW installed capacity). Second reason: panels are not oriented in an optimal way, there would be substantial loss in efficiency .
✳️ The proper solution for “ready-made”/prefabricated solar installation shall be supplied as 3 (three) 5-ton boxes - one is with panels, another one - with prefabricated wooden enclosure (locally-made), and a third one - with miscellaneous items like invertor, optimizers, batteries, cabling, connectors, etc.
✳️ Prefabricated wooden enclosure would be assembled on spot (very simple task that requires 2-3 person), panels are to be mounted according to a preset scheme, while invertors+batteries are supplied pre-connected and fully pre-programmed to work immediately when they are connected.

If countries were people…
🇨🇳China is like professional football player who is using twice as many energy as an average person. Large supply of electricity (1.57 GWp per 1 million people) supports heavy industries, abundant mining, processing of minerals and advanced urbanization.
🇻🇳Vietnam is an average person who uses an average amount of energy (0.74 GWp per 1 million people). An average “country-person” has diversified industries, energy-supported agriculture, some urban life and decent balance between imports and exports.
🇪🇹Ethiopia is an unfortunate “country-person" who consumes as little calories as one large apple per day (0.04 GWp per 1 million people). Ethiopia as a country cannot develop, obtain food security and energy security without ten-fold increase in energy generation.

🇨🇳 China plans to build 450 GW of wind and solar power in Gobi desert by 2030 - that’s more than twice the total amount of solar and wind power installed in the 🇺🇸USA. Chinese industry has overwhelming capacity to service such ambitious project.
🏝 Gobi desert lays at a border between 🇨🇳China (Chinese province of Inner Mongolia) and country of 🇲🇳Mongolia. Electricity will have to be transported about 2000 kilometers to largest Chinese electricity consumers at the Pacific coast.
🔺 Just 15 years ago such plan won’t be realistic because of bottlenecks in the electric grid infrastructure. Since then China have invested 80-90 billion USD to build world-leading system of ultra high voltage (direct current and alternate current) transmission lines that operate at voltages of 800-1000 kV.

"The Reporter" wrote a piece of two industrial parks in 🌼Addis (17.09.2022). Those parks: Kilinto Industrial Park and Bole-Lemi II Industrial Park “despite being 98% completed four years ago have been stalled for years due to power issues…” The article mentions multiple 💵 many-million-dollars payments to enable electricity supply to both parks but have failed to do so. Kilinto park was supposed to get 200 MW and Bole Lemi II - 134 MW (side note: this is too much of a promise, about 15% of EEU’s “wheeling capacity” for the whole 🇪🇹Ethiopia).
As a 🔆solar energy businessman and a person who believes in decentralized off-grid energy solutions I couldn’t help myself but thought os a simple solar energy installation that would resolve this energy issue.
Both parks are specialized for ✳️ pharmaceutical and medical factories that have to be build by standards set by Federal Drug Authority, so IPDC does not build sheds, providing future tenants with infrastructure underground. Both parks are sitting on huge land plots: Kilinto Park - 279 hectares; Bole Lemi II Park - 181 hectares.
🔆 Solar energy installations can be deployed in several steps, and I would suggest IPDC to start with 30 MW generation* per each industrial park. About 2-5 MW shall be used for water treatment, sewage systems, communications, etc. while the rest is to be provided to tenants. In order to generate 30 MW we will need ~67,000 solar panels each taking 2 sq.m. — the area of 134,000 sq.m., or 13.4 hectares (5-8% of parks’ territories).Extra electricity generation is to be built on rooftops of tenants’ sheds as well as on rooftops of technical buildings of industrial parks.
*-This is extreme simplification. In real life we don’t provide “XX MW” but rather “YY MWh”, and calculations are different. Happy to talk details.

🇪🇹Ethiopian ⚡️Energy Abundance — these 3 simple words define strategic goal of “10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia”.
Professor and religious scholar James Carse (1932-2020) would call our business plan “an infinite game”.
What does it mean, and why it is important for our partners, investors, and customers?
🔺Small book “Finite and Infinite Games” written by Professor Carse in 1986 have introduced important dichotomy between finite and infinite. “Finite games are played by known players. They have fixed rules. And there is agreed-upon objective that, when reached, ends the game… In finite games, there is always a beginning, a middle and an end. Infinite games, in contrast, are played by known and unknown players. Infinite games have infinite time horizons. And because there is no finish line, no practical end to the game, there is no such thing as "winning" an infinite game. In an infinite game, the primary objective is to perpetuate the game.”
🔺In 2019 Simon Sinek - one of the most important business thought leaders - published book “The Infinite Game” where he looks at Carse’s work from business point of view. Simon starts his book with a preface titled WHY I WROTE THIS: “It’s surprising that this book even needs to exist. Over the course of human history, we have seen the benefits of infinite thinking so many times. The rise of great societies, advancements in science and medicine and the exploration of space all happened because large groups of people, united in common cause, chose to collaborate with no clear end in sight. We did these things not because of the promise of an end-of-year bonus; we did these things because we felt like we were contributing to something bigger than ourselves, something with value that would last well beyond our own lifetimes.”
🔺Goal as ambitious and daring as Energy Abundance is certainly an “infinite” goal, therefore our company will be looking into adjacent topics such as e-mobility, scenarios for productive energy use in agriculture and agro-processing and other.
✳️ Join us in our journey! We are interested in strong partners among financial organizations, commercial farmers, industrialists as well as private equity and angel investors. The road to Ethiopian Energy Abundance is a long one, plan for a long trip.

I am a 🔆 solar person, as you already know :-) When a solar person sees 200 square meter rooftop there is just one thought: solar panels can be placed there. I would put 40 photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) panels and 30 high-performance photovoltaic (PV) panels. This way we will generate 30+ kWp and more than enough hot water.
🔺Such solution will provide abundant electricity for processing of plastic bottles: sorting, shredding, packing, as well as hot water for washing bottles before processing. Actually, this amount of electricity would be excessive for PET processing, and this collection center can also act as 🥶cold storage center for the community, or run small 🧃agro processing, provide 📡shared internet connection, operate a 🍾Coca-Cola kiosk, support 🔦street lighting, et cetera.

🧙♂️The Conference Board just published it’s Global Economic Outlook, 2000-2035.
📈Projected GDP growth for USA is 0%, Europe - 0.1%, Japan - 1.3%. Average growth for “mature economics” - 0.4%.
🔺This is obviously recession, and I feel that Western recession is a good thing for 🔆solar energy in 🇪🇹Ethiopia.
🔸 Western recession is good for 🇪🇹Ethiopian economy for two reasons:
1️⃣people and companies will need cheaper things, and we can realize our cost advantage
2️⃣people and companies will be looking to expand outside of recession zone, and we are outside
🔺African Development Bank promises us 5.7% economic growth in 2023, and 99% of this growth will be supported by expanding energy supply to 🇪🇹Ethiopian economy. Sectors like farming, agro processing, industries, mining, tourism - all need electricity to strive and grow, and every one of those sectors can use off-grid 🔆solar energy as a sole source of electricity.

✳️ “Green” hydrogen is a simple idea: you generate “green” electricity (i.e. electricity from solar, wind, hydro or geothermal sources - AKA renewable energy sources), then use this electricity for electrolysis - take a lot of water and split in into oxygen and hydrogen.
💋 Beauty of hydrogen is also simple: it can be used as a source of energy that is not causing environment damage and climate change.
🛵 Transporting hydrogen is less simple: you should either compress it at 700 bar (equal to placing something under 4km of cement) or cool it to -253 degrees, and then transport the resulted product.
🟣 This endeavor takes crazy amount of ⚡️energy and lots of 💧water — both scarce and precious resources. No wonder that some bright minds devised a “brilliant” idea of using African sources of “green” energy and African water to produce “green” hydrogen and then export it to energy-hungry Europe.
🟢 Handling of hydrogen is very expensive: compressing/freezing facilities cost hundreds of millions of dollars, same applies to loading/unloading terminals and very special ships. The only way to make hydrogen projects viable is to make them huge.
🟠 Introducing 🇳🇦Namibia Green Hydrogen Projects: a family of 🔆solar-powered hydrogen businesses with the same core idea: use vast hyper-arid gravel plains and dunes that stretches along Namibia's entire coastline to build gigantic solar power plants, take water from Atlantic Ocean and enjoy a lot of exportable “green” hydrogen.
🔵 Does 🇪🇹Ethiopia need to produce and export “green” hydrogen?
🔴 No.
🟡 There are 80-100 million 🇪🇹Ethiopian farmers, good amount of underground💧water and abundant⚡️solar energy. Water and energy shall serve farmers, help to avoid droughts and make Ethiopian agriculture productive and highly profitable. 🇪🇹Ethiopia needs projects like DREAM that bring irrigation and agro processing to farmers.

🇨🇳 Why 20th congress of Chinese communists is good for 🔆solar energy in 🇪🇹Ethiopia.
🟠 In two-hour speech at the Congress 🧑🏻⚖️Chairman Xi mentioned Africa exactly 0️⃣ times.
🔵 The mighty “Bridges and Roads Initiative” that were once estimated at $11,000,000,000,000 (11 trillion dollars) was only mentioned once, as a part of a glorious history of Communist Party of China.
🔴 There is a very good chance that we won’t see any more vast infrastructure projects financed by Chinese state-owned banks and executed by Chinese state-owned construction companies, as this activity was never mentioned in Chairman’s speech.
🟣Xi Jingpin have stressed that “China has become a major trading partner for more than 140 countries and regions, it leads the world in total volume of trade in goods”, and we should be certain that Chinese exports will keep coming, supported with all strength of one of the largest economies in the world.
🟢 Chairman Xi have also confirmed his resolve to ”… deeply promote the energy revolution, … accelerate the planning and construction of a new energy system, and actively participate in addressing climate change and global governance”. This means that China will remain the largest market for solar panels, inverters and batteries, and Chinese firms will enjoy great benefits of production scale.
🟡 Benefits for Ethiopian solar energy market are two-fold: 1️⃣ there would be abundance of supply of inexpensive equipment; 2️⃣ there would be no politically-motivated gigantic projects that distract attention from practical and realistic business cases.

🔴 There is NO African country among members of International ⚡️Energy Agency. The developing world is delegated to a group of “IEA association countries”, but only 3 countries (Egypt, South Africa and Morocco) represent a region of 54 African countries.
🟣 Therefore we should not be surprised to see that IEA’s 524-pages report “World Energy Outlook - 2022” does not really talk about the world but rather about “Global North” - an approximately 20% of world population. “Global North” and especially good old Europe is certainly going through very challenging period, as strong reliance on Russian natural gas have backfired, and there is no easy way around this problem.
🟢 Unsurprisingly, Russia is mentioned ~250 times, natural gas ~350 times and Africa ~150 times. The “World Energy Outlook” talks about energy transitions, climate change, net zero emission pledge, “1.5 degree Celsius goal”, cost inflation, clean manufacturing, and many-many of other concepts. Each concept is supported by data, deep analysis of dynamics and projections, bright infographics, etc.
🟡 When it comes to emerging markets, especially our Sub-Saharan Africa, the difference is striking: no analysis, no data, no quantified predictions. “Energy demand will be huge”, “electricity will take big part in energy consumption”…
✳️ 99.9% of the “World Energy Outlook” is irrelevant for 🇪🇹Ethiopia. We don’t depend on Russian natural gas, we have never bought Russian oil, our emissions are minuscule, “energy transition” has no place in our energy system, as we are yet to develop strong energy supply.
🔆 Solar off-grid large-scale commercial and industrial (C&I) solutions will help 🇪🇹Ethiopia to achieve decentralized energy abundance at scale that is not known to “World Energy Outlook - 2022”.

🟠 We live in year 2022, right? There is no serious scientist today who will deny climate change as a human-made catastrophe in the making, which biggest cause is burning of the fossil fuel.
Fossil fuels are not 😈 evil, of course. They are a great source of energy, well-researched and highly efficient. For couple hundred years humanity is using fossil fuels and became very much addicted to it. 🇪🇹Ethiopia imports 3,7 billion tons of petroleum products alone, and spends more than $3 billion 💵 on it.
🟢 Good news is that we do not have to import more and more oil every year. There are other sources of energy, and we don’t need to spend precious dollars on them.
🟡 Ethiopian sun, 🔵 Ethiopian rivers, 🟣 Ethiopian geothermal energy - those are our home-grown sources of energy, and we will live happy and prosperous life developing those types of energy, and relegating important fossil fuels to industries where there are no economical alternatives.

🔵 Have you read on every relevant website that 🇪🇹Ethiopia generates 97% of it’s ⚡️electricity from renewable sources, mostly hydro?
Well... 🇪🇹Ethiopian hydro power stations generate much less electricity that country desperately needs. And 🇪🇹Ethiopians always take care of themselves. More than 50,000 diesel generators burn diesel oil, a whopping $1 billion worth of diesel oil every year.
🔴 Therefore ~50% of country's electricity is generated by burning 🛢️diesel oil. Ethiopia emits _3.5 million_ ton of CO2 every year while burning diesel oil for electricity.
🔆 Do you see why we need abundant off-grid solar electricity generation?

🧑🏾🚀When Egyptian slaves were building magnificent pyramids for dead pharaohs the only energy known to human civilization was the muscle energy.
🔸Very little amount of kilowatt-hours was generated from coarse bread, boiled meat and fresh dates - sad diet of slaves. But job was done, and no CO2 was emitted.
🔹Fast forward 3500 years. Humans build palaces, pave roads, get water to fields, mill flour, etc. with almost no slave power but rather with powered tools. Most of tools are powered with oil products (petrol, diesel, etc.), and a lot of CO2 is being emitted thus killing our planet.
🔺Let us go back to times when humanity was creating magnificent projects without CO2 emissions. We just need to use electrical tools, devices, machines AND use clean energy to generate electricity.

🌳Ethiopian forests are epitome of abundance. Nothing in the world can be compared to calm, green, immense woodlands that cover our land.
🇪🇹Ethiopian forests absorb CO2 and help the world to mitigate climate change.
🌍Abundant natural resource meets abundant human energy, and this is Green Legacy Initiative launched by Dr. Abiy Ahmed. This Initiative was started in 2020 and will result in 20 billion trees to be planted before 2025.
🌴Reforestation of Ethiopia has a long way to go: Ethiopia has lost 98% of its forested areas in the last 50 years. According to the UN, forest coverage fell to just over 4% during the 2000s, down from 35% in the early 20th century.
🔆Abundant task of reforestation meets in Ethiopia with abundant deficit of electricity. If we fail to complement this activity with development of renewable off-grid electricity generation for rural farms and villages, newly planted trees will be cut and burned for cooking.

👧🏾 One of the most enlightening projects is “Ethiopian School Meal Initiative”. It was created by Frealem Shibabaw, and later expanded by Ethiopian Government, international development agencies and Mayor of Addis.
☝🏾“Eureka moment” came for Frealem when she realized that a 5-year old kid was attending school with an empty lunch box - because his family can't afford to give lunch for a school day, and he didn't want to draw attention.
🥙 Now city administrations and development agencies are supplying school lunches for children in primary schools, thus fighting malnutrition and eliminating one of barriers for development.
🔵 More than 50% of primary schools in Ethiopia don’t have ⚡️electricity. No schooling after dark, no internet access at school, no computers. For many kids it means no school at all, as they help parents during daytime.

🔺January 3, 2022 will be remembered in history as a day when startup founders were reminded that biotechnologies are different from information technologies. On 3rd of January 👧 Liz Holmes, founder of Theranos, was found guilty.
🔺Liz did same things that every famous founder of every famous startup: she believed in her idea, under-delivered her pilot product, created strong “reality distortion field” and did not stop when things were not going according to plan.
🔺First version of blood-testing machine built by Theranos had the same problem as first version of iPhone: it was very very bad blood-testing machine, as iPhone was very very bad phone.
🔺If Theranos would be IT startup it would develop next version, or pivot to another business model, or switch to other architecture… But Theranos wasn’t an IT startup, it was a medical device startup and there were real people who received wrong results of their blood tests from very bad blood testing machine that Liz Holmes designed.
🔺I doubt that after release of first iPhone any Apple employee wanted to talk to journalists and reveal how bad a phone it was. Bad phones do not put people’s lives at risk. But bad blood tests are bad for patients, and Theranos’s employee talked to John Carreyrow of The Wall Street Journal, and in two years Theranos was destroyed along with $945 millions of investors’ money.
🔺Disgraced and convicted Liz Holmes is unlikely to find solace in a fact that court have found her not guity in defrauding Theranos patients. There were 11 charges levied against Holmes, and she was found guilty for 4 of them — “defrauding investors”.
🔺Liz Holmes was essentially convicted of being too optimistic when communicating with three funds who invested about 15% of all money. Her company was not a public company, and shares were not offered to general public. People who invested in Theranos had no reason to think that their investment is safe: no big-name venture capital firm have ever invested in Theranos.
🔺On 25th of November Liz Holmes was sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison. Her sentence starts on April 27 next year - by that time she will be mother of two children: a newborn (she is pregnant now) and 2-year old.
🟢 Two lessons here: (1) it is never a good idea to lie to investors; (2) don’t think that you can do wrong things because other people do wrong things - there is always a chance that someone will make you an example.
⚠️ When you start new enterprise, ask yourself if your miscalculations or misconceptions can be harmful to people, and be always mindful of this.

<unpublished interview>
Q1: Ethiopia has major plans beyond hydropower including solar. Will Ethiopia become a regional power in green energy? What are the obstacles?
Ethiopia has great energy potential for solar, wind, hydro and geothermal energy. The amount of energy Ethiopia can produce is virtually unlimited. Still, energy delivery infrastructure (“wheeling” capacity, in energy-talk) is almost non-existent in the region, especially when we look at connection between countries. Vast distances and complicated landscapes make development of such infrastructure prohibitively costly. I personally don’t believe in centralized energy production and expansive energy distribution, I think future lays in decentralized energy systems.
Q2: As you look at Africa overall, with its huge solar potential (and green hydrogen investments), will that translate into international influence as we saw with Middle East oil-producing countries? What are two or three challenges?
I expect that the era of “international energy influence” will end within this decade. Nuclear-enabled Europe won’t need outside energy supply. It is hard to see how energy-dense countries (90% of Europe, Japan, etc.) can survive without baseline energy generation that is high density - nuclear, large-scale wind or some new technology. The idea of producing “green hydrogen” in Africa and delivering it to Europe is so colonial that it is insulting.

Last Friday/Saturday 🇪🇹 Ethiopia have celebrated Christmas.
Christmas was the most important celebration to great Joseph Brodsky. “Christmas 1971”:
When it’ s Christmas we’ re all of us magi.
At the grocers’ all slipping and pushing.
Where a tin of halvah, coffee-flavored,
is the cause of a human assault-wave
by a crowd heavy-laden with parcels:
each one his own king, his own camel.
Nylon bags, carrier bags, paper cones,
caps and neckties all twisted up sideways.
Reek of vodka and resin and cod,
orange mandarins, cinnamon, apples.
Floods of faces, no sign of a pathway
toward Bethlehem, shut off by blizzard.
And the bearers of moderate gifts
leap on buses and jam all the doorways,
disappear into courtyards that gape,
though they know that there’ s nothing inside there:
not a beast, not a crib, nor yet her,
round whose head gleams a nimbus of gold.
Emptiness. But the mere thought of that
brings forth lights as if out of nowhere.
Herod reigns but the stronger he is,
the more sure, the more certain the wonder.
In the constancy of this relation
is the basic mechanics of Christmas.
That’ s what they celebrate everywhere,
for its coming push tables together.
No demand for a star for a while,
but a sort of good will touched with grace
can be seen in all men from afar,
and the shepherds have kindled their fires.
Snow is falling: not smoking but sounding
chimney pots on the roof, every face like a stain.
Herod drinks. Every wife hides her child.
He who comes is a mystery: features
are not known beforehand, men’s hearts may
not be quick to distinguish the stranger.
But when drafts through the doorway disperse
the thick mist of the hours of darkness
and a shape in a shawl stands revealed,
both a newborn and Spirit that’s Holy
in your self you discover; you stare
skyward, and it’s right there:
a star.

🗣️ This manner is not only idiotic it’s also detrimental to your business: a person who you have tried to contact will now be annoyed by you, and negative towards your offer.
😎 LinkedIn and AI algorithms do great job protecting our valuable time. I have lived through such a dialog without writing a single word: 100% of texts were suggested by application :-)

🧐The Reporter have published a very interesting text by @Ashenafi Endale on the 2nd part of the Homegrown Economic Reform (I would suggest to brand it “Great Ethiopian Economic Renaissance Reform”).
It will consist of two major components:☝🏾free floating of national currency and✌🏾opening wholesale, supply, and retail markets to international market participants.
This reform will be a game changer for Ethiopian solar energy industry for four reasons:
1️⃣foreign investors in energy field will be more comfortable to invest
2️⃣substantially increased oil price will put diesel generators put of competition for off-grid energy
3️⃣increased import prices for electric machinery will push Government to increase electricity tariffs
4️⃣International companies in wholesale, supply and retail business will be open to engage in solar energy projects

🎉 Chinese New Year 2023 starts on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023, and first week of celebration in a public holiday in People’s Republic of China. New Year’s celebration will culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 5th, 2023. The Lantern Festival has own symbolism and deep meaning, and certainly deserves a separate post.
👹 Legend says that a monster named Nian is coming on the eve of every New Year’s. So it is no surprise that everyone celebrating Chinese New Year is setting off firecrackers at midnight. In the morning, firecrackers are used again to welcome the new year and good luck. As you may imagine, this day sees the most of fireworks in the whole year in the whole world.
✳️ Chinese year 2023 will be year of Rabbit (zodiac sign), and of Water (element). What does wet rabbit hold for us?
🐇 Rabbit is fast and steady, friendly and even promiscuous, impulsive and unpredictable. Wet rabbit, I can assume, is little slower and even more promiscuous :-)
🇨🇳 China is one of the most important countries for global solar industry. Almost 80% of solar equipment (panels, inverters, batteries, cables, connectors, other accessories) is made in China. Third of the solar electricity in the world is generated in China: installed capacity is 323 Gigawatt. Many of the best solar companies are located in China: Jinko, Longi, Huawei and lots of others.
🇨🇳 Chinese companies have huge domestic market, but we need them to engage with Ethiopia to help us develop our homegrown electricity generation, that is solar generation.

🇪🇹The single most important number in Ethiopian economy: 2.46%.
👶🏾 It is the growth rate for our population.
🧮 Simple math tells that in just 5 short years Ethiopia will have 10 million new people.
Almost 10 million young people in 5 years will reach age when they need good paying jobs.
In order to keep country peaceful and prosperous we need to bring employment and comfortable life to young people.
💡The only way to achieve this is to grow economy. And growing economy needs abundant electricity.

🟡 500MW of solar energy generation was announced last week by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The joint development agreement signed between 🇪🇹Government of Ethiopia and 🇦🇪UAE-government owned renewable energy company Masdar. Very scarce details hint to two separate solar power plants to be built. There is no information about timing and budget.
This project is gigantic for Ethiopia but not very large for Masdar who has $30 billion dollar project portfolio in 40 countries. Largest solar project that Masdar is developing is 2 Gigawatt solar power plant in UAE.
🔺It is impossible to overestimate importance of such project for the country.
☝🏾Additional 500MW of electricity generation is vital for economy.
✌🏾Such massive “proof of concept” for solar energy should influence decision of commercial farmers, miners and rural industrialists to move from diesel-generators to solar.
🤟🏾More educated and experienced solar professionals will be joining Ethiopian workforce.
Still, we would be happy to know details.

🟡 In 2022 (just in one year!) the world has built 260GWp of solar electric generation. It is more than the all electricity generation capacity of Germany or France or Canada.
🌍 Africa is lagging far behind, doing just 10-12GWp in 2022, although it will see more than 111GWp in new projects that are currently under development.
🇪🇹Ethiopia has 4MWp of solar generation, while our neighboring 🇰🇪Kenya has more than 240 MW solar installed and very lucrative “feed-in” tariff of 12 cents per kWh. High feed-in tariff means that companies can invest in solar generation and sell generated electricity to local energy utility company.

✋🏾Some say that direction is more important than speed. This is very wrong.
🏃🏾♂️The key success factor in business is agility, ability to shift course, capacity to adapt, power to change.
📉Most companies and businesspeople are afraid of change, and this is very human. Do you remember how kids dislike new things?
☝🏾Agility never comes easy. Beginners will see it as a danger. Successful entrepreneurs - as a distraction. Small firms are trying hard to appear solid and firm, and ban agility. Large corporations are rigid, self-confident, arrogant, and they ban agility.
🔺You need to be always self-aware and cognizant of your surroundings, market and competition, and always fit to changing landscape.

Those of us who are still in a Christmas mood will enjoy another great poem by Joseph Brodsky.
== 1 January 1965 ==
The Wise Men will unlearn your name.
Above your head no star will flame.
One weary sound will be the same—
the hoarse roar of the gale.
The shadows fall from your tired eyes
as your lone bedside candle dies,
for here the calendar breeds nights
till stores of candles fail.
What prompts this melancholy key?
A long familiar melody.
It sounds again. So let it be.
Let it sound from this night.
Let it sound in my hour of death—
as gratefulness of eyes and lips
for that which sometimes makes us lift
our gaze to the far sky.
You glare in silence at the wall.
Your stocking gapes: no gifts at all.
It's clear that you are now too old
to trust in good Saint Nick;
that it's too late for miracles.
—But suddenly, lifting your eyes
to heaven's light, you realize:
your life is a sheer gift.

🟣 African Development Bank have published detailed and thoughtful “Africa’s Macroeconomic Performance and Outlook” report.
🔺Ethiopia will grow 5.2% in 2023-24. A number of factors depress economic growth: expensive agricultural imports, expensive oil, damage from war, worrying security situation in several regions. But despite a combination of several shocks, growth in all five African regions was positive in 2022, and the outlook for 2023-2024 is projected to be stable.
🟠 The report recommends robust mitigation measures. These include a combination of monetary, fiscal and structural policies, including:
▪️Timely and aggressive monetary tightening in countries with high inflation and cautious monetary tightening in countries with low inflationary pressures. Coordination with fiscal policy will further strengthen leverage to ease inflationary pressures.
▪️Increased resilience by increasing intra-African trade, especially in manufactured goods, to protect the economy from volatile commodity prices.
▪️Accelerate structural reforms to build tax administration capacity and invest in digitalization and e-governance to increase transparency, reduce illicit financial flows and increase domestic resource mobilization.
▪️Improved institutional governance and adoption of policies that can leverage private sector financing, especially greenfield projects that are climate and pandemic resilient, and mobilize Africa's resources for inclusive and sustainable development.
▪️ Taking decisive action to reduce structural fiscal deficits and public debt accumulation in countries at high risk of debt distress or already in debt distress.
🟡 Abundant energy supply is key to development. Ethiopian projected growth is more than $5 billion of new economic activity — tremendous amount of new energy demand.
🔆 Off-grid solar generation can satisfy this demand and we at "10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia" are ready for this challenge.

🔺Year 2030 is supposed to be a year when every person on a planet has electricity. In Africa alone, 580 million people (~40% of population) don’t have electricity. In Ethiopia, approximately 50% of people don’t have electricity.
🔺The topic of “universal energy access” is one of the most popular at international conferences and other events. It seems that this issue keeps more people employed in Brussels and Washington than a population of small African country.
💐Flowery speeches and beautiful presentations on a topic of “universal energy access” hide a simple truth: it is impossible to weight how much electricity for a household is a right amount of electricity.
🌍Ethiopians are using less than 200kWh per year. Europeans are using 7000kWh per year. Americans - 14000kWh. Saudis - 24000kWh.
🔺How many kWh should a household receive in order to be considered to have “energy access”? This is the most important question.
🇮🇳Indian government had once defined “energy access” as 30kWh per household per year (this is good for couple lamps and phone charger), and have reported that most of the country is receiving electricity.
⚡️International Energy Agency considers “energy access” as 50kWh per household per year - extremely little amount - and we see so many international and local government initiatives working to provide that minuscule amount to everyone: solar lamps, lilliputian mini-grids with capacity of 100kWp for villages of 2000 people, etc.
I would think that such projects make more happy people in Brussels (capital of EU) than in the whole Ethiopia.
✳️ What would you prefer:❎ Solar lamp at home and not enough electricity in local health center to power refrigerator and boiler?
❎ Solar lamp at home and not enough electricity to power street lamps in village?
❎ Solar lamp at home but no electricity to power cooler at local shop?
🔺Goal of “Universal energy access” does not make any sense as it should not be a single objective.
🔺It is not enough to have electricity at home. We need electricity at health centers, schools, communication centers, local police stations. It is also crucial to have street lights, to maintain cold logistical chain in retail and in agriculture, etc. etc. etc.
🔺“Universal energy access” should be “Abundant energy access”. Abundant energy gives an opportunity for productive use, and this is the only way to development.

Recent (Nov-22) ambitious document “Roadmap to Mobilize USD 1 Trillion by 2030” by @
Bloomberg Philantropies, World Resource Institute and International Solar Alliance has a wealth of interesting numbers and observations.
🔺One simple chart have caught my attention.
🔺In last 10 years the installed solar capacity in the world have increased 20 times (sic!) - from 40 GW in 2020 to 843 GW in 2021.
🔺At the same time the annual solar investment increased only 2 times - from $91 billion to $205 billion per year.
🔺Why this is important? Solar is becoming cheaper every day (~80% decrease in cost during the same period), so investment to deploy solar generation capacity is less and less every year.

== Moscow Carol (1962) ==
In such an inexplicable blue,
Upon the stonework to embark,
The little ship of glowing hue
Appears in Alexander Park.
The little lamp, a yellow rose,
Arising -- ready to retreat -
Above the people it adores;
Near strangers' feet.
In such an inexplicable blue
The drunkards' hive, the loonies' team.
A tourist takes a snapshot to
Have left the town and keep no dream.
On the Ordynka street you find
A taxicab with fevered gnomes,
And dead ancestors stand behind
And lean on domes.
A poet strolls across the town
In such an inexplicable blue.
A doorman watches him looking down
And down the street and catches the flu.
An old and handsome cavalier
Moves down a lane not worth a view,
And wedding-party guests appear
In such an inexplicable blue.
Behind the river, in the haar,
As a collection of the blues -
The yellow walls reflecting far
The hopeless accent of the Jews.
You move to Sunday, to despair
(From love), to the New Year, and there
Appears a girl you cannot woo -
Never explaining why she's blue.
Then in the night the town is lost;
A train is clad in silver plush.
The pallid puff, the draught of frost
Will sheathe your face until you blush.
The honeycomb of windows fits
The smell of halva and of zest,
While Christmas Eve is carrying its
Mince pies abreast.
Watch your New Year come in a blue
Seawave across the town terrain
In such an inexplicable blue,
As if your life can start again,
As if there can be bread and light -
A lucky day -- and something's left,
As if your life can sway aright,
Once swayed aleft.

🟣 On 26-27 of January heads of African states, Chairperson of the African Union, President of the African Development Bank Group, have gathered together in Dakar, Senegal for the Food Africa summit.
🔵 Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group: “This is the time to invest in Africa’s future. The continent has more than 60% of the world’s remaining arable land, and millions of Africans are productive in the agriculture sector. With the removal of barriers to agricultural development aided by new investments, it is estimated that Africa’s agricultural output could increase from $280 billion per year to $1 trillion by 2030.”
🟠 At the event African Development Bank have announced planned investment of $10 billion and a further $20 billion by several partners in support of Africa’s agricultural transformation. The International Fund for Agricultural Development, the Islamic Development Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa, and several bilateral partners are among international supporters of the summit.
🔵 H.E. Andry Rajoelina, President of the Republic of Madagascar: “On the African continent today, we are facing a war. The war against famine and malnutrition. It is not only weapons, bombs or tanks that kill. Famine and malnutrition kill more people than armed conflict.”
🟡 Needless to say, electrical energy is an essential component of modern agriculture. You cannot grow food without irrigation hence without electricity. You cannot process food without electricity. You cannot have cold storage without electricity.
🔵 H.E. Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal: “The agriculture sector is considered a lame-duck in Africa. We need a shift as Heads of State to prioritize the agriculture sector and farmers.” “We need to inject more resources to upgrade agriculture and change perceptions…We need to find means to give land to women and youth”.
🔺“We need to consume what we produce and produce what we consume. Produce Africa, consume Africa”.

🟣 Can Ethiopia learn from Microsoft?
🔄 First of all, we are not that different.
🟢 Ethiopian gross domestic product (adjusted by purchasing power parity, PPP) is $290 billion, Microsoft’s revenue is $198 billion.
🟠 Ethiopia certainly wins on number of people: 120 million inhabitants vs 220 thousand employees of Microsoft.
🔵 Ethiopia’s debt to GDP ratio is 40%, Microsoft’ 90% (and we shouldn’t follow them).
🔆 Recently, Microsoft have announced that it will need at least 2.5 gigawatts of solar panels for its electricity needs. Microsoft’s objective is to receive 100% of its electricity consumption with renewable energy by 2025.
🟡 If Ethiopia will install 2.5 gigawatt of solar panels, it will replace 100% of dirty and terrible diesel generators, and will become 100% “green” too.

But headlines are not a story. The story is completely different. Chinese government is considering to stop exporting of technology to produce solar wafers.
🔆 Production of solar wafers (one of core ingredients of solar photovoltaic panels) is very expensive, extremely energy intensive and quite dirty process, that is presently done mostly in China and that requires raw materials that are being mined mostly in China.

2️⃣ increase in milk production by 2.7 times
3️⃣ increase in meat production by 5.8 times
4️⃣ increase in egg and chicken meat production by 2 times
5️⃣ increase in fish production by 4.2 times

One of the greatest poets of our time Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996) was born in Leningrad, USSR. Soviet Union have appreciated his genius in a specific soviet way: in February 1964 he was arrested. In prison he survived a heart attack, then was tortured in “psychiatric ward” and in March of 1964 Brodsky was convicted to 5 years of prison as a “tuneyadets” (person who avoids employment) despite being employed as a writer and translator. Unprecedented international campaign have forced Soviets to free Joseph Brodsky. In June of 1972 his citizenship was revoked and he was pushed out of USSR - literally put on a plane to Vienna, and to global fame.
“I Sit By the Window” (1971)
I said fate plays a game without a score,
and who needs fish if you’ve got caviar?
The triumph of the Gothic style would come to pass
and turn you on—no need for coke, or grass.
I sit by the window. Outside, an aspen.
When I loved, I loved deeply. It wasn’t often.
I said the forest’s only part of a tree.
Who needs the whole girl if you’ve got her knee?
Sick of the dust raised by the modern era,
the Russian eye would rest on an Estonian spire.
I sit by the window. The dishes are done.
I was happy here. But I won’t be again.
I wrote: The bulb looks at the floor in fear,
and love, as an act, lacks a verb;
the zero Euclid thought the vanishing point became
wasn’t math—it was the nothingness of Time.
I sit by the window. And while I sit my youth comes back.
Sometimes I’d smile. Or spit.
I said that the leaf may destroy the bud;
what’s fertile falls in fallow soil—a dud;
that on the flat field, the unshadowed plain
nature spills the seeds of trees in vain.
I sit by the window. Hands lock my knees.
My heavy shadow’s my squat company.
My song was out of tune, my voice was cracked,
but at least no chorus can ever sing it back.
That talk like this reaps no reward bewilders
no one—no one’s legs rest on my shoulders.
I sit by the window in the dark.
Like an express, the waves behind the wave like curtain crash.
A loyal subject of these second-rate years,
I proudly admit that my finest ideas
are second-rate, and may the future take them
as trophies of my struggle against suffocation.
I sit in the dark. And it would be hard to figure out
which is worse: the dark inside, or the darkness out.

A doorman watches him looking down
And down the street and catches the flu.
An old and handsome cavalier
Moves down a lane not worth a view,
And wedding-party guests appear
In such an inexplicable blue.
Behind the river, in the haar,
As a collection of the blues -
The yellow walls reflecting far
The hopeless accent of the Jews.
You move to Sunday, to despair
(From love), to the New Year, and there
Appears a girl you cannot woo -
Never explaining why she's blue.
Then in the night the town is lost;
A train is clad in silver plush.
The pallid puff, the draught of frost
Will sheathe your face until you blush.
The honeycomb of windows fits
The smell of halva and of zest,
While Christmas Eve is carrying its
Mince pies abreast.
Watch your New Year come in a blue
Seawave across the town terrain
In such an inexplicable blue,
As if your life can start again,
As if there can be bread and light -
A lucky day -- and something's left,
As if your life can sway aright,
Once swayed aleft.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #1/3)
☝🏾 Our continent is not only well able to feed itself, but can become a bread basket of the world.
🔺 In Ethiopia, we have been working diligently to enhance agricultural productivity in the past four years. We have commenced an initiative that encourages small-holder farmers to farm in clusters that enable them to benefit from irrigation and mechanization.
🔺 Ethiopia is undertaking a massive campaign to encourage both large- and small-scale poultry, dairy, livestock farming, as well as urban agriculture.
🟡 I call upon our African Union and development partners to support in unleashing this potential.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #2/3)
🤨 Global meetings on climate change are rich with the rhetoric of climate justice, the just transition, common but differentiated responsibilities of parties.
🔺These talks, however, are hardly ever backed up with action. And Africa cannot wait.
🇪🇹 Ethiopia is definitely not waiting for solutions to come from outside. Instead, we are doing all we can to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
☝🏾 For my country, investment in environmental protection is not a charity; it is driven by enlightened self-interest. For us in Ethiopia, environmental protection is about everything we are as a society. It is about our ability to feed ourselves. It is about our ability to conserve water and other precious resources. It is about our ability to preserve peace between adjoining communities. It is about our survival as a nation.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed’s Statement at the 36th Assembly of African Union (quote #3/3)
🌍 African countries are engaged in environmental conservation, reforestation and massive investment in the generation of clean energy from hydro sources. In short, Africa is leading the world in areas that matter for all humanity and it is time for Africa's leadership role to be recognized and institutionalized.
☝🏾 I would like to use this opportunity to lend my voice yet again for Africa to be represented on the UN Security Council with at least one permanent seat and double non-permanent seats. Moreover, Africa also needs to have proportionate representation at the G7, the G20 and similar global forums.

🔆 Carbon Credits — should you care?
African Business Forum at Sheraton Addis was a beautiful congregation of beautiful people in beautiful suits speaking beautiful things. @gepp @seforall @uneca
🟡 The subject of the Forum is little exotic: carbon credits, voluntary carbon markets and compliance/regulatory carbon markets.
🔺 I invite you to decide for yourself if you should be interested in carbon credits.
☝🏾 If you generate 300kW-h for 8 hours, you will use approximately 800 liters of diesel oil per day.
✌🏾 800 liters of diesel oil when burned create 2,112 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2)
🖖🏾 In 300 working days, it will be 633.6 tons of CO2. In 5 years - 3,168 tons.
👋🏾 Carbon credit goes for $50-70 per ton. So 5 years of saving the planet will bring you $150,000-200,000, covering roughly 10% of your costs.
✊🏾 The situation will look different if carbon credits can be received for the whole lifespan of solar installation (15 years), and the price will be of at least $100 per ton. This way you will receive $950,000.
✳️ We will be watching African carbon market and inform you about it’s developments.

✳️ How much electricity 🇪🇹 Ethiopia needs to develop? Part III.
In July of 2020 Ethiopian government (Planning and Development Position) have presented “10 Years Development Plan 2021-2030”. One can find it online both in Amharic and in English.
🔺This plan aspires to make Ethiopia an “African Beacon of Prosperity”. First of all, by improving income levels and wealth accumulations “so that every citizen would be able to satisfy their basic needs and aspirations” — beautiful and noble objective.
🔺Ten year plan sets ambitious economic goals that cannot be reached without ambitious growth in electricity production.
Let’s focus on 👷🏿mining development objectives:
1️⃣ increase gold production by 3.2 tons to 137 tons (42 times)
2️⃣ increase number of mining industries that add value to precious and semi-precious minerals from 30 to 130 (4.3 times)
3️⃣ increase number of mining industries that produce construction inputs from 1,500 to 6,500 (4.3 times)
4️⃣ increase number of mining industries that produce minerals that serve as inputs for the production of chemicals and petrochemicals from 100 to 1,100 (11 times)
🔺@10 Green Gigawatt for Ethiopia estimates the amount of new electricity generation that is required to support those objectives as 200 MW.
The most cost-effective solution is 🔆 off-grid solar+battery - cheapest energy generation that is built right at the location of energy consumption.

Brodsky’s Nobel lecture - post 1/4
✳️ On June 4, 1972, Joseph Brodsky was put onto plane to Vienna by plaincloth KGB officers. A non-conformist alien in a totalitarian USSR he immediately found his place and role in free world. He has been Poet-in-Residence and Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan, Queens College, Smith College, Columbia University, and Cambridge University in England. In 1978, Brodsky was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters at Yale University, and on May 23, 1979, he was inducted as a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1981, Brodsky was a recipient of MacArthur Foundation’s award for his works of “genius”. In 1986 a collection of Brodsky’s essays on the arts and politics won the National Book Critic’s Award for Criticism.
In 1987 Joseph Brodsky was awarded The Nobel Prize in Literature - “for an all-embracing authorship, imbued with clarity of thought and poetic intensity”. He delivered his Nobel lecture in Russian, with an authorized English translation.
🖋️
“For someone rather private, for someone who all his life has preferred his private condition to any role of social significance, and who went in this preference rather far – far from his motherland to say the least, for it is better to be a total failure in democracy than a martyr or the crème de la crème in tyranny – for such a person to find himself all of a sudden on this rostrum is a somewhat uncomfortable and trying experience.
This sensation is aggravated not so much by the thought of those who stood here before me as by the memory of those who have been bypassed by this honor, who were not given this chance to address ‘urbi et orbi’, as they say, from this rostrum and whose cumulative silence is sort of searching, to no avail, for release through this speaker.
The only thing that can reconcile one to this sort of situation is the simple realization that – for stylistic reasons, in the first place – one writer cannot speak for another writer, one poet for another poet especially; that had Osip Mandelstam, or Marina Tsvetaeva, or Robert Frost, or Anna Akhmatova, or Wystan Auden stood here, they couldn’t have helped but speak precisely for themselves, and that they, too, might have felt somewhat uncomfortable.
These shades disturb me constantly; they are disturbing me today as well. In any case, they do not spur one to eloquence. In my better moments, I deem myself their sum total, though invariably inferior to any one of them individually. For it is not possible to better them on the page; nor is it possible to better them in actual life. And it is precisely their lives, no matter how tragic or bitter they were, that often move me – more often perhaps than the case should be – to regret the passage of time. If the next life exists – and I can no more deny them the possibility of eternal life than I can forget their existence in this one – if the next world does exist, they will, I hope, forgive me and the quality of what I am about to utter: after all, it is not one’s conduct on the podium which dignity in our profession is measured by.”

🏆 87.5 millions euro for solar energy projects for commercial and industrial companies
French financier Rgreen Invest and Echosys Advisory-backed investment advisor Echosys Invest have closed a new fund to finance solar power production across Africa.
🌍Afrigreen Debt Impact Fund, totalling €87.5 million (US$92.53 million), will be used to finance on- and off-grid solar power plants for small and medium-sized commercial and industrial consumers in the continent, with a focus on West and Central Africa.
Fund will support 20-30 projects in Ghana and Nigeria using local currencies — support for this is provided by International Development Association (IDA)’s “Private Sector Window Local Currency Facility”. Average project will be worth €5 million covering 30-50% of necessary financing.

😎 My conversation with Samson Berhane was recently featured by @Sun-Connect-News.
There are several points that I am desperately trying to get to readers:
(1) Ethiopia needs at least TEN times more electricity that it generates today
(2) Binding and maintaining national electric grid for Ethiopia is prohibitively expensive
(3) Solar off-grid generation is always a least-cost and by far the fastest solution
